  • Let there be more Art! - Sunday May 17 15:45 2009 - Kai Sterker

In addition to their portrait, each of the Dun Barethsol characters has been captured as a sprite. Here's a short selection:

These are not animated yet, but they are definitely a huge step forward in our artwork department. But regardless of that, we are still in need of item, scenery and creature graphics. If you could help with those, please leave a message on adonthell-artwork or come by #adonthell at irc.freenode.net.

  • Adonthell v0.4 alpha 3 released - Thursday May 07 19:42 2009 - Kai Sterker

With the Adonthell 0.4 alpha 3 release, another milestone in our development effort has been completed. Most notable additions are:

    • Basic GUI functionality and a simple dialogue.
    • NPC schedules and path finding.
    • Proper map view and renderer.

Due to the premature state of the map editor and lack of graphic talent, the demo map itself remains unchanged to previous alphas. However, it now includes an NPC to interact with in order to learn more about Adonthell and our plans for the future.

Source code and OSX binaries are ready for download, a version for Windows should follow shortly.

    Update: Windows binary available now.

  • Map Editor in the making - Sunday Apr 05 12:16 2009 - Kai Sterker

With the next prerelease of the Adonthell engine ready soon, work on the game tools has been picked up again. One of the most important of these -- the map editor -- is finally taking shape:

Soon it will be possible to create larger and more interesting areas than what came with the last few engine demos.

For that, we do need matching art, however! So if you want to help to bring a true demo map to life, or to (re)make Waste's Edge and its surroundings for the v0.4 demo game, please let us know!

  • Let there be Art! - Wednesday Jan 14 21:30 2009 - Kai Sterker

In just a few days time, a lot of the Dun Barethsol characters gained a face, with the rest to follow shortly. Praise goes to the tireless Grumbel (of Pingus fame) for the fine portraits he created:

To let these and the other NPCs come truly to life, the actual character sprites are still needed. Help with those would be greatly appreciated. Leave a message on adonthell-artwork if you are interested.

  • Thank You! - Sunday Dec 28 10:45 2008 - Kai Sterker

The year 2008 is nearing its conclusion, so it's time to say "Thank you!" to all contributors and users. Hope you enjoyed working on and playing Adonthell!

Most notable contributions include a complete Danish translation of Waste's Edge, as well as work in progress translations into French and Spanish. We're also very happy about all the bug reports, Wiki updates and inquiries to help out that we received, even if nobody stuck around in the end.

But despite the lack of active programmers, we did have a fairly productive start into 2008. Completion of the 3D collision detection internals (as seen in the alpha 2 release) was followed by a version bump of the Waste's Edge code base to 0.3.5, addressing issues related to translations and new compilers.

Development slowed down afterwards, though. Improvement of the internal data structures for the map engine and implementation of the map view left the renderer in a sad state, and that's where it's still at. If you're looking for a little challange, here's your chance!

Plans for the next year include completion of the delayed alpha 3 release, a working map editor and much more artwork. And you can help too, to make it happen! :-)

  • Adonthell enters Fedora - Wednesday Jul 02 19:45 2008 - Kai Sterker

Mathieu Bridon sent in word, that

"Adonthell and Waste's Edge just landed in the Fedora testing repositories for F8 and F9.

If you are using Fedora and want to try it, just run (as root):

    # yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install wastesedge

Once you tried it, you can help me having it included in the Fedora stable repository by going to the following links and adding a commentary specifying if it works or not.

If the package works for enough people, it will have a good karma. Once the karma is high enough, it will be automatically included in the stable repository.

    Here are the links:

Please note that those are not bug trackers, so any issues encountered with the game should not be reported there. Those links only concern the Fedora packages, not what is inside ;)

You don't need any Fedora related account to make a comment, the only pre-requisite is to have tested the package you are commenting :)"

This means that of the big Linux distros, only OpenSuSE is not including Adonthell yet.

  • Adonthell 0.3.5 released - Tuesday Jun 03 20:18 2008 - Kai Sterker

An updated source tarball of the Adonthell engine is available, which adresses the following issues:

    • Bug with line-wrapping of UTF-8 encoded text
    • Segfault in conjunction with some combinations of freetype and SDL_ttf
    • Compatibility issues with GCC version 4.3
    • Copies of SDL_mixer and SDL_ttf no longer included

Note that there is no accompanying version 0.3.5 of Waste's Edge yet, as the current release remains compatible. An updated game package and binaries will be made available once a French translations have been completed. This would also be the perfect time to include other translations. If you are interested in helping out, please let us know.

  • Waste's Edge maintainance release in the making - Wednesday Apr 30 19:25 2008 - Kai Sterker

Ongoing efforts to include Adonthell -- Waste's Edge into Fedora and an upcoming French translation were good opportunities to make v0.3 fit for recent compilers (GCC 4.3) and distributions (64bit).

If you had trouble compiling Adonthell v0.3 lately, please give the CVS a shot and see if it fixes your issue. Bug reports are also welcome, so that we can work out a fix before v0.3.5 comes out.

Fedora users can follow the progress Waste's Edge makes in becoming part of the distribution and get preliminary source RPMs too.

In other news, long-term graphic artist Cirrus started creating new in-game art for v0.4. Welcome back! I'm sure he'd be happy about some help, though :-)

  • Adonthell v0.4 alpha 2 binaries available - Saturday Mar 15 17:40 2008 - Kai Sterker

Precompiled packages demonstrating the new map engine on MacOS X and Windows are now available for download. If you'd rather build from source on these platforms, see our Wiki for detailed installation instructions.

  • Adonthell v0.4 alpha 2 released - Monday Mar 10 21:39 2008 - Kai Sterker

The Alpha 2 release marks an important milestone on Adonthell's road map. Its new 3D internals enable a more immersive game world, where trekking across difficult terrain may become a challenge in itself. But fear not: on the outside, Adonthell will continue to use the classic 2D look of its role models, the great console RPGs of old:

    Adonthell 0.4 Alpha 2

That aside, the latest reinforcement to our team (hey Rian!) has helped vastly with the underlying GUI components, so that the next Alpha will hopefully be able to incorporate more pieces of already existing code, like interaction with NPCs and items. Nevertheless, more help is needed, everyone welcome!

Download the source code now, binaries soon.
